Edward Ambrose Cooke, son of Dr. Henry Gansevoort Cooke, MD and Maria Burritt Cowdrey, was born at Holmdel, Monmouth Co., New Jersey, 22 April 18871,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 and baptized at the First Reformed Dutch Church, Holmdel, Monmouth Co., New Jersey, 3 September 1887.2 He died at San Clemente, Orange Co., California, 14 September 1960. Both he and his wife were buried at Pacific View Memorial Park, Corona del Mar, Orange Co., California.9,10

Edward married Adele La Force, daughter of Walter Sylvester Force and Marion Bain Jackson, at Brooklyn, Kings Co., New York, 12 November 1913.11,12

He is shown to be a son of Dr. Henry Gansevoort Cooke, MD and Maria Burritt Cowdrey by his birth certificate which name them. Other evidence includes a baptism record from the Holmdel Dutch Reformed Church, his parent's family bible, and the 1900 federal census where he is listed in Henry's household as son.1

Edward was named after his mother's brother, Edward Cowdrey, who died of wounds suffered in the Civil War.

He attended Mohegan Lake Military Academy, 1902-03; Rutgers Prep, 1904-05 and Coleman Business College in 1906. From 1906-08 he worked at Lloyds Insurance and returned to Rutgers for another year in 1909. In 1910 he worked for Dewey's (unknown type of business) as a manager, and from 1911-13 he was a manager at the W. H. Force Co., which is apparently how he became acquainted with Adele.

On 5 June 1917, he registered for the draft in Atlantic Township, Monmouth Co., New Jersey. At the time he was a self-employed farmer of Eatontown. Although having a wife and child, he did not claim exemption.13

He may have graduated from Rutgers Agricultural School and did run several farms in the Red Bank and Lincroft areas of New Jersey before moving to Southern California in February, 1928. He started at Westinghouse January 1931 and worked for them for 20 years as a clerk in the X-Ray and warehouse departments before retiring and settling in San Clemente.

In a 1942 city directory for Los Angeles, he is shown as a storekeeper for Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Co. and residing in Los Angeles with wife Adele at 2733 Harcourt Ave., which he owned.14 In the aftermath of Pearl Harbor, Congress extended the age limits for selective service registration, requiring men between 45 and 65 to register. Commonly referred to as the "Old Man's Draft," none of these registrants were drafted. Ed registered at Local Board 235, 4652 W. Washington Blvd., April 26, 1942, and indicated he was employed at Westinghouse Electric on So. San Pedro St.15

At his home in San Clemente, he maintained an extensive garden plot and flew the American Flag every day. The house was on a hill behind the town and had a tremendous view of the ocean. The house is still visible from Interstate 5 if you know where to look. As his illness progressed, the place became too much to maintain and they were forced to move to a much smaller house in town.

He died of lung cancer resulting from years of heavy cigarette smoking.
