Ephraim Squire Force, son of William Force and Aletta Carter, was born at Brooklyn, Kings Co., New York, 6 January 18221,2,3,4,5,6 or perhaps at Madison, Morris Co., New Jersey.7 He died at Greenwich, Connecticut, 11 March 1914,1 and was buried at Green-Wood Cemetery, Lot 24796, Section 198, Brooklyn, Kings Co., New York, 15 March 1914.8,1

Ephraim married Sarah Jane Whitehead, daughter of Squire L. Whitehead and Permelia Sherman, at Brooklyn 7 November 1844.9,10

Ephraim Force was educated in the New York public schools. He entered the building business in 1848 in New York and Brooklyn. Later his eldest son, Charles E. Force entered the business with him under the name of Ephraim S. Force and Son. The firm was very successful, developing a large number of homes and business buildings. Ephraim retired in 1882.

At his death, he was among the oldest living members of the Manhattan Lodge No. 62, A. F. & A. M. (Masons) and of the old Volunteer Fire Department of New York City, Live Oak Company, No. 44.

His marriage to Sarah Jane took place at the Third Presbyterian Church of Brooklyn, W. B. Lewis, Pastor.

According to his granddaughter, Adele Cooke, the day of his funeral was one of the worst snowstorms ever in New York. The City Fire Department turned out "en masse" to honor him, and a special city effort was made to clear the streets. The service took place in the home of Walter S. Force, 1164 Dean Street, Brooklyn.11
