Norton Co., Kansas: 1905-1908

Mar 7, 1905 Snowed, rained. We all moved from Cass place near Allison where we had lived since Mar. 14, 1895 to the farm 1 mile W. of Lenora, which was 18 miles east of Allison. We brought 2 loads and sprung wagon. Got here at 2 P. M.
Mar 12 Went up to Cass place at Allison with 2 wagons & the next day brought 2 loads chickens and turkeys.
Mar 21 Went up to other place at Allison and brought down 20 cows.
Mar 24 Went up to other place with 2 wagons and brought 21 young sows. Essie took Co. examination.
Mar 27 I and Roy went up other place and brought 17 swarms bees.
Mar 30 I, Roy & Kent, Huey went up to other place & brought 37 cattle.
Apr 2, 1905 Sun. Kent got his eye hurt. Home. Guy Foster rode Mellie down.
Apr 3 Planted potatoes in orchard. Took cattle to stock yards in Lenora.
Apr 4 Got up early & I and Roy went and loaded cattle & I went to K. C. with cattle. Got $5.75 hundred lbs. for 37 head. Average weight 1272 lbs. each.
Apr 6 I got home from K. C.
Apr 14 I and Roy went up to other place and staid all night and next day hauled hogs to Jennings. 76 head average weight of each 226 lbs. Got $5.37½ hundred lbs. Hogs brought.
Apr 16 Went to meeting at square top P. M. To funeral afternoon.
Apr 28 Took John Bennett and Henry Swendener up to look at other place.
Apr 29 Got scales. All went to Town P. M.
May 1, 1905 Got 1 load corn. Washed. Worked on scales.
May 3 J. H. Wilson came & I and Huey went up to other place. Staid all night and brought 2 calves & 102 pigs down here. Sold Wilson 2 mares. Beauty & Floss for $350.00 and 60 hogs at $5.00 per hundred lbs.
May 5 Bought black horse team of Mr. Turner for $162.50. I and Boys went to other place and got 40 fat cattle & four cows.
May 7 Went to meeting at square top school house.
May 8 Began to dig cellar for new house. Big revival meeting began in Lenora.
May 9 I started to K. C. with stock. Roy & Huey went up to other place.
May 10 Roy and Huey got home from other place with 94 pigs. Big wind storm. Mr. Swisher and boy got killed north of town.
May 11 I got home from K. C. Got $5.20 for cattle. Boys worked on cellar.
May 12 Hauled rock. Worked on cellar. Lloyd helped.
May 27 Big rain & hail. River up highest its ever been. Up to corner of barn.

Aug 12, 1905 I went up to Mr. Bennetts. Got load corn.
Aug 13 Sunday hot. Went to meeting morn. Ross and Stella got whooping cough.
Oct 9, 1905 Butchered 1st hog. Got steers of Fraziers.
Oct 10 Got 40 steers. Cutting.
Oct 11 Boys got cattle from other place. Sold 16 bu. apples. Bought 1st load corn of Thompson.
Oct 12 Finished inside of house & scrubbed floors. Got light plant.
Oct 13 Commenced porches. Paid Mr. Tuggle.
Oct 14 Cold day. Went town. Worked on house.
Oct 15 Sunday staid at home. Mr. & Mrs. S. Barrick Dan Lottei here.
Oct 16 Monday. Washed. Hauled hay. Worked on house.
Oct 26 Mr. Mellon got painting done. Paid $26.00. Made balester.
Oct 27 We commenced to move into new house. Ross got his boots. Snowing.
Ot 28 Moving all day.
Oct 29 Sunday staid home all day. Raining & snowing.
Oct 30 Moving and fixing. Snowing.
Oct 31 Done chores. Went to meet Mrs. Dochow.
Nov 1, 1905 Mrs. Dochow & children went home. Jim came to work on porch.
Nov 2 Mr. Little fixed hot water pipes. Mr. Tuggle got done on house.
Dec 17 Aunt Viola Cover died at her home in Calif. (Riverside).
Dec 24 Staid home. In eve went to Xmas tree at Lenora in eve.
Dec 25 Christmas day at home. Took hogs to ship.
Dec 26-27 Washed. Shipped hogs. Took roosters to town. Made hominy.
Jan 1906 The Lenora Cornet Band had a box supper and Essies box sold to Levi Dewitt for $1.25. Elsies box sold to Lewis Loyd Larrick and Estellas box to Dan Larrick and after supper was over Levi took Essie home and Dan walked home with Estella for 1st time.
Feb 2 Got new surrey snowing. Put up Lula & coles colts to wean.
Mar 1, 1906 Went S. E. Bought 54 steers for $1320.00
Mar 2 Terrible blizzard all day from N. W. Done chores.
Mar 6 Took 63 hogs averaged 305 lbs and 20 steers averaged 1200 lbs to town.
Mar 7 Shipped stock to K. C. Hogs sold for 6.22½ steers for $4.85
Mar 10-11-12 Snowing. Done chores. Harry Goldsberry commenced to work for me.
Mar 14 My Birthday. 50 yrs. old. Snowy. Got flour.
Mar 28 Mr. Boyd killed himself. Sold Prince and Colos colt for $300.00
Mar 29 Mr. Boyd to be buried. Rained some.
May 12, 1906 Sat in early morning. I, Minnie, Huey, Kent, Elsie & Rossie started to Jennings in carriage. We stayed all night with Mrs. Dochows & Sunday to Mr. Lines funeral, then came home.
Jun 7, 1906 Lula died. Dry. Finished putting up 70 acres hay.
Jun 10 Got ice made ice cream. Stella went to Edmind with J. D. Larrick.
Jun 20 I and Minnie went to Logan Ks.
Jul 4, 1906 Went to Norton to celebration. Essie went to Hill City with Simpson.
Jul 4 Wed. Fine day. I Minnie, Roy, Huey, Kent, Elsie & Rossie got up early and started to Norton at 8 A. M. to celebrate the 4th.
Jul 13 Finished stacking 2nd crop alfalfa E. of house.
Aug 29, 1906 All went to Norton to Fair except Stella & Roy. Hot.
Sep 5, 1906 Roy & Stella went to Logan to Jubilee. Popa sick with boil on leg.
Sep 7 The commencement exercises of Lenora Public School were held in Methodist Church. Essie was one of the graduates.
Dec 13, 1906 I, Minnie, Roy & Essie went to Frank Grooms place near Jennings. Ate dinner and from there we went with funeral procession to Glen Valley School house with Uncle Will Mackeys body. Funeral & then to Allison School grave yard where his funeral was preached and he was burried beside Aunt Leona. His death was caused by blood poisoning from a gun shot wound. He was 40 yrs old and left 5 children.
Dec 25 Estella came home from Logan yesterday where she has been helping Dans sister Alpha make her wedding clothes. At home all day.
Feb 7 1907 I went to Ill. to see mother who is sick.
Feb 19 Stella & Dan Larrick were married in the forenoon. Dan was 38 yrs. old and Estella was 23 yrs. old. They drove out to Rev. Mulkeys home & he married them. Estella had a beautiful trousseau but was married in a simple white dress. They went to house keeping that afternoon in their new house. It was a nice day & we had a nice wedding dinner for them.
Mar 23, 1907 We went to Lenora P. M. Peach trees in bloom.
Mar 24 All went to S. S. in P. M. Hot. Windy. Drove load hogs to town to ship to St. Joe. One died from heat.
Mar 25 Monday. Dana Roy Logan and Chella May Gardner were married in Grand Junction Colo. Roy was 21 yrs. old and Chella was 17 yrs. old. I and Huey went up to Gardner place and met Roy & Chella. Came home with them and staid all night with us and next morning. Went with load sows & pigs back to Gardner place to begin house keeping.
Mar 29 I and Arnal went and bedded 3 cars of cattle to ship out in morning.
Apr 23, 1907 Started to K. C. with 2 cars cattle. Orval listed. Dana birthday. Stella came out in afternoon, and we went fishing down south. Big steer died in feed lot. Very hot.
Apr 24 Hot and awful windy. Dirt in air.
May 28 Cold. Froze ice ½ in. thick.
Jun 8, 1907 Misty. Got weed cutting done.
May 19 The Christian Church was dedicated in Lenora. Clara Hazelrigg had charge of services. Raised $982.00. Enough to pay off all debt.
Jun 20, 1907 Essie went to Norton to attend teachers institute for a month.
July 26, 1907 I, Minnie & Rossie started on western trip to Salt Lake City.
Aug 16, 1907 Got home from trip.
Aug 29 I and Roy started to Atchinson to buy land.
Sep 18, 1907 I took Essie out to Dist 54 in Graham Co. 6 mi. S. W. of Lenora where she was given contract to teach 6 mos. School at $40.00 mo. & to stay with Mr. Larsons for $3.00 wk. Board & room.
Sep 30 Got up early. Huey took Essie out to her school.
Nov 28, 1907 Thanksgiving day. Nice day. Roy & Chella, Stella & Dan & Mrs. Dochows here.
Dec 25, 1907 Christmas at home all day.
Feb 11 1908 Roy & Chellas first baby girl Hazel born.
Mar 14, 1908 Byron & Jessie Scott & children here all day.
Mar 17 Roy, Chella & Hazel took train moving to their new home 1 mi. N. of Burlingame. We’ve sold our farm home west of Lenora & are going to move.
Apr 1, 1908 Had our sale. Mr. McCroes came out & took possession.
